worldofdesign designer imageVISUAL IDENTITY: Why is New York City nicknamed the Big Apple? Some say it began as a way to describe prizes given to winners of top horse races held in New York in the 1920s.

In the 1970s, a campaign to increase tourism adopted the Big Apple as an official symbol of the city. Designers often use symbols, or logos, to help people identify with a product.

NEW YORK CITY BY DESIGN

Join Kids Think Design as we travel the world to explore how good design is alive in many different communities. Our first stop is New York City, international arts center and the home of National Design Week. National Design Week is a series of programs and free exhibits sponsored each year by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum to honor great design. Look through this slideshow to explore what makes New York special — including its skyscrapers, its art museums, the fashion industry and the energy of the many creative people that call New York City home.
